While I'd love to read the article, and even link to it, it seems they want $50 for an annual subscription before they'll let me see it.

Well that's a crock.
Today I got email saying I could get the online version of Network World. I pushed the "accept" button and then was taken to the 5 pages of who I am, how much money do I spend on IT and what my hat size is.
I gave them the same answer: No thanks.
